Other "Pet Food" Companies: Contracting With Killers

American Dehydrated Foods, Inc.

American Dehydrated Foods, Inc. (ADF), hired the laboratory that we investigated to test its “pet” food ingredients on animals. The cats used in the company’s studies were kept in tiny stainless-steel cages inside windowless trailers and received absolutely no exercise, socialization, or enrichment.

On June 20, 2002, our investigator visited ADF cats 1147 and 1087. Cat 1147 had discharge coming from both his eyes, and our investigator reported that his left eye had a “cloudy film” over it. Both of cat 1087’s eyes were swollen shut and, according to an animal care technician, had not been open for some time. The technician also reported that the cats had been undergoing treatment with a topical ointment for months but that their conditions had not improved. It was not until October 4, 2002 (the same day that they were killed), that 1147 and 1087 were correctly diagnosed with entropion (the rolling inward of the lower eyelid and eyelashes) and a hematoma of the cornea, respectively. Neither of these conditions can be treated with topical ointments, and as a result, 1147 and 1087 suffered through months of painful and useless treatments.

ADF has not responded to our concerns. Please demand that ADF stop using animals in laboratories to test its products:
