Other "Pet Food" Companies: Contracting With Killers

Washington University buys pigs from the laboratory that we investigated.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2002, a lab employee delivered several pigs to the university. Upon returning to the facility, the employee complained to colleagues that one of the pigs looked as though he or she was about to die.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2002, an unnamed woman from the university called the lab to complain that two Hanford pigs that the university had received a week earlier were underweight and had a substantial number of abscesses. In addition, this individual reportedly told the president and the laboratory’s pig manager that a study had to be postponed for two weeks in order to get the pigs’ weight up to where it should have been.

We informed university officials of these incidents and let them know that the facility’s pig manager had failed to provide veterinary care to a pig who had a broken foot and to another pig whose uterus was prolapsed.

The university has not responded to our concerns. Please ask why it has failed to address these serious issues:
